The physical removal of unwanted hair is a useful, if not necessary, adjunctive therapy. Permanent hair removal can be accomplished by electrolysis, which destroys the hair’s regeneration mechanism. Contrary to popular belief, shaving and plucking does not induce faster or coarser hair growth. However, it is painful and can cause significant inflammation, infection and scarring. If possible, medical therapy should be the first line therapy followed by electrolysis. Excellent results are now possible with the use of laser therapy and can offer important adjunctive therapy. In some cases permanent hair removal is possible. Laser therapy works best on individuals with dark hair.
