The Story Behind the INCIID Miracles and Memories Pin

In 2003, INCIID introduced what became one of the first awareness pins created not only to recognize infertility, but also to honor pregnancy loss, failed adoption, and the deeply personal grief experienced by millions of families around the world.

At the time, infertility and pregnancy loss were still spoken about mostly in whispers. Patients often carried their grief privately, isolated by stigma, misunderstanding, and silence. Public awareness campaigns existed for many diseases and causes, but very few symbols acknowledged the heartbreak of infertility or the loss of a hoped-for child. INCIID believed that needed to change.

The Miracles and Memories (MAM) awareness pin was created as part of INCIID’s worldwide Miracles and Memories Campaign — a movement dedicated to increasing public understanding, patient education, advocacy, and compassionate support for those navigating infertility, pregnancy loss, and adoption-related grief.

More than twenty years later, the message behind the pin remains just as important.

A Symbol of Compassion, Connection, and Advocacy

The INCIID Miracles and Memories pin was never intended to be simply an accessory. It was designed to be a quiet but powerful symbol of recognition and unity — a reminder that no one should walk through infertility or loss alone.

For many patients, the pin became a way to:

The Meaning Behind the Colors

Every color within the ribbon was intentionally chosen to represent different parts of the infertility and loss journey.

White

White incorporates the qualities of all other colors. It symbolizes innocence, spirituality, peace, and compassion. Within the Miracles and Memories ribbon, white represents the profound losses that often remain unseen by the outside world — the loss of a pregnancy, the loss of fertility, the loss of dreams, and the heartbreak of a failed adoption.

White also symbolizes unity and compassion for every person affected by infertility and loss.

Baby Blue

Baby blue represents communication, loyalty, and emotional connection. It symbolizes the honest and deeply human desire to build a family.

The blue in the ribbon reflects:

• Compassion for others experiencing infertility or pregnancy loss
• Commitment to supporting patients and families
• The strength of community and group unity
• Open conversation about a disease too often hidden in silence

Pink

Pink represents vulnerability, hope, tenderness, and justice.

The pink in the ribbon recognizes the emotional courage required to continue moving forward through infertility treatment, repeated loss, uncertainty, and grief. It reflects both the softness and extraordinary resilience of those who continue to hope even after heartbreak.

The Heart at the Center

At the center of the pin is a heart containing two connected figures reaching toward one another. The design symbolizes support, human connection, partnership, and the shared experience of navigating infertility and loss.

The heart reminds us that infertility affects more than the body. It affects relationships, identity, families, friendships, and emotional well-being. The connected figures represent the power of community and the importance of compassionate support.

Why We Are Relaunching the Pin Today

INCIID is relaunching the Miracles and Memories awareness pin as part of our continued effort to rebuild community, increase awareness, and create meaningful conversations around infertility and loss.

Even today, infertility remains misunderstood. Pregnancy loss is still minimized or dismissed. Many families continue to suffer silently.

The need for compassionate support has not disappeared.

In fact, in today’s fast-moving social media environment, meaningful and thoughtful awareness matters more than ever.

This pin continues to represent:
