About
Geoffrey Sher, M.D. is internationally recognized as one of the foremost pioneers in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Over more than 40 years, he has helped shape the modern field of assisted reproductive technology (ART), influencing clinical practice worldwide.
After training under IVF pioneers Patrick Steptoe and Robert G. Edwards, Dr. Sher established the first private IVF program in the United States in 1982. He later founded the Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine (SIRM), which expanded into a network of centers across the U.S. and internationally.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sher has been at the forefront of innovation, contributing numerous “firsts” that have advanced IVF success rates and patient safety. His pioneering work includes the early use of gonadotropins for ovarian stimulation, introduction of intrauterine insemination (IUI) with washed sperm, identification of endometrial thickness as a predictor of IVF success, and the development of protocols to prevent severe ovarian hyperstimulation. He was also among the first to identify and treat immunologic implantation dysfunction, and to integrate advanced genetic testing techniques such as PGT with CGH and later next-generation sequencing (NGS) to improve embryo selection and outcomes.
Dr. Sher has authored more than 200 scientific papers and abstracts and is the author of the widely read book In Vitro Fertilization: The A.R.T. of Making Babies. His work has contributed to the births of more than 17,000 babies worldwide and has influenced generations of fertility specialists.
While Dr. Sher has stepped back from full-time clinical practice, he remains actively involved in patient care as a consultant through Sher Fertility Solutions. In this role, he provides individualized second opinions and treatment guidance—particularly for patients with complex infertility, recurrent pregnancy loss, or repeated IVF failure. Many of his patients travel from across the United States and internationally seeking his expertise after unsuccessful prior treatments.
Dr. Sher also played a pivotal role in advancing patient access to fertility care through his work with The InterNational Council on Infertility Information Dissemination. He was instrumental in helping launch the INCIID IVF Scholarship Program and served as a member of both the INCIID Board of Directors and Advisory Board, contributing his leadership and expertise to expanding access to care for those in need.
Known for his compassionate, patient-centered approach, Dr. Sher has long been an advocate for individuals and couples facing infertility. His legacy continues through his ongoing advisory work, the physicians he trained, and the countless families he has helped create.
