About

- Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and
- Clinical Reproductive Medicine Associate Attending Obstetrician/Gynecologist, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital

“All patients at The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine receive care that is customized in light of their unique history and circumstances. My goal is to identify the specific cause of a couple’s infertility by performing a thorough history and evaluation, and to individualize treatments tailored to help couples achieve their goal of pregnancy in a timely manner, with the least intervention necessary to achieve a healthy baby. I also understand that many of us work and have busy lives, so we offer early office hours to limit the stress and impact of treatments on patients’ schedules.”

Dr. Schattman is a leader in the field of Reproductive Medicine. He served as the 2011–2012 President of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), the leading association of in vitro fertilization–specialized physicians.

As Chair of SART’s Practice Committee from 2004 to 2009, he developed many of the guidelines that physicians use in infertility care. He is a member or fellow of numerous medical associations, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. Dr. Schattman is an Associate Professor of Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology and Clinical Reproductive Medicine at The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) of Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Schattman is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He specializes in treating infertility using a full range of options, including IUI, in vitro fertilization (IVF), fertility preservation, and minimally invasive reproductive surgery.

Fertility Preservation at CRM
Dr. Schattman has expertise in caring for patients who are considering preserving or extending their fertility through egg (oocyte) or embryo freezing. This is an option for women in a wide range of circumstances, including those who may face challenges conceiving after cancer treatment (oncofertility).

Dr. Schattman is the Principal Investigator for a number of IRB-approved research studies aimed at improving outcomes for patients undergoing fertility preservation. Through these studies, women who must begin cancer treatment immediately, as well as prepubertal girls, are able to have ovarian tissue cryopreserved for potential future use. Breast cancer patients may also undergo ovarian stimulation without significant increases in estrogen levels through the use of an aromatase inhibitor.

For more information about CRM’s fertility preservation services, contact the dedicated Fertility Preservation Program Specialist at (646) 962-5450.

Reproductive Surgery
In addition to his clinical work and research in fertility preservation, Dr. Schattman is a leading minimally invasive surgeon. He was one of the first gynecologic surgeons to perform robotic surgery for reversal of tubal ligation and excision of uterine fibroids. He is particularly experienced in advanced surgical methods used to treat common causes of infertility, including blocked fallopian tubes, intrauterine adhesions, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts. He also uses minimally invasive techniques to treat gynecologic conditions such as abnormal uterine bleeding and uterine malformations.

Education and Experience
Dr. Schattman earned a Bachelor of Science from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, in 1983, and his medical degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, in Brooklyn, New York, in 1987. He completed his residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at The George Washington University Medical Center in 1991. He completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and joined the CRM faculty in 1993.

He has received numerous awards, including “Best Doctor,” as well as multiple teaching honors. He lectures nationally and internationally on infertility topics and is widely recognized for his expertise in ovulation induction and in vitro fertilization.

Dr. Schattman has authored numerous articles and textbook chapters and continues to lecture on a wide range of topics in reproductive medicine. He sees patients in CRM’s main office on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call (646) 962-3836.
