Terms Of Use
By registering for, accessing, or using any INCIID programs, forums, or services, you agree to be bound by both these Terms of Use and INCIID’s Privacy Policy, which is incorporated herein by reference.
These two documents together constitute the complete agreement between you and INCIID governing your use of this community. Both documents are available at inciid.org. We encourage you to read them carefully before registering.
Your continued use of INCIID constitutes your ongoing acceptance of both the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy, including any updates made in accordance with the modification procedures described in each document.
If you do not agree with either document in full, please do not register or use INCIID services.
INCIID as a Journalism Entity
INCIID is a journalism entity that has produced original health reporting, patient advocacy content, medical education, and community journalism for over 30 years. Published content on INCIID may draw directly from the experiences and testimony of anonymous community members.
INCIID asserts journalistic source protection rights recognized under shield laws and journalistic privilege. We will vigorously defend the anonymity of our members and contest any unauthorized attempt to compel disclosure of member identities.
By registering and participating in INCIID’s community, you acknowledge that your contributions may inform INCIID’s editorial work and that INCIID’s source protection principles apply to your participation. For full details please read INCIID’s Privacy Policy at inciid.org.
1. Registration and Identity
Truthful and complete registration information is required. False or misleading registration information may result in immediate account suspension.
INCIID requires your real full legal name at registration for account verification and community safety purposes. Your real name is never displayed publicly, shared with other members, or used for any commercial purpose. It is accessible only to INCIID administrative staff.
You will choose a display name — your handle — which is the only name ever visible to other members or the public. You are strongly encouraged to choose a handle that cannot be connected to your real identity.
IMPORTANT: Publicly sharing your real name, location, phone number, email address, workplace, or any other personally identifying information in forum posts is not only discouraged — it is prohibited. This policy exists to protect you. Violations will result in post removal and may result in account suspension.
2. Privacy
INCIID maintains a comprehensive Privacy Policy that governs how your information is collected, used, and protected. The Privacy Policy is incorporated into these Terms of Use by reference and forms part of your agreement with INCIID.
By registering with INCIID you agree to the Privacy Policy in full. You are encouraged to read it carefully at inciid.org before registering.
Key privacy commitment: INCIID does not sell your data. We do not share your personal information with advertisers. We do not profit from your presence here beyond the mission of serving you.
3. Community Standards and Behavior
INCIID is a support-focused environment serving individuals navigating some of the most difficult experiences of their lives. Members agree to:
- Communicate respectfully at all times
- Not post unlawful, harmful, abusive, defamatory, or offensive content
- Not impersonate others or misrepresent identity
- Not disrupt the community or interfere with others’ participation
- Maintain confidentiality of account credentials
- Use only one account unless explicitly approved by INCIID
- Never attempt to identify, expose, or reveal the real identity of any other member
- Never pressure another member to share personal information publicly or privately
- Never share another member’s personal information without their explicit consent
Harassment, personal attacks, stalking, identity exposure, or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and may result in immediate account suspension or permanent termination.
4. Posting and Content Guidelines
General Expectations
Members must:
- Post in appropriate forums
- Use proper content headers where required
- Avoid cross-posting
- Never include real names, addresses, phone numbers, clinic names with identifying details, or any other personally identifying information in public posts
- Be mindful that forum content may be indexed by search engines — do not post anything you would not want to appear in a public search result
Sensitive Content Standards
INCIID serves individuals navigating infertility, pregnancy loss, and family building. Members must be especially mindful when posting about pregnancy, parenting, loss, and adoption. Content that may be distressing to others must follow established guidelines and be posted in appropriate forums.
Reproductive Health Content Advisory
INCIID serves members in a rapidly changing legal landscape regarding reproductive healthcare. Members are encouraged to be thoughtful about the specific details they share in public forum posts regarding medications, procedures, treatment decisions, and reproductive choices. INCIID cannot provide legal advice. Members who have concerns about their legal exposure related to reproductive healthcare decisions should consult a qualified attorney.
IMPORTANT: Forum content may be indexed by search engines. Your handle protects your identity — but the content of your posts may be publicly searchable. Never include information in a post that could identify you or expose you to harm.
Required Content Headers
Members must use appropriate headers to protect vulnerable community members:
- PG MENT — Pregnancy Mention
- CHILD MENT — Child Mention
- LOSS MENT — Loss Mention
- ADOPT MENT — Adoption Mention
Posts that violate content guidelines may be removed without notice.
5. Member Safety — Crisis Response
INCIID is a community built on trust and a deep commitment to member privacy. There is one circumstance where that commitment is superseded by something more important: your life — and the safety of others.
If a member posts content that indicates a credible risk of imminent harm to themselves or others — including expressions of suicidal intent, plans for self-harm, threats directed at another person, or content suggesting a member or someone known to them is in immediate danger — INCIID will take action.
This is the one situation in which INCIID will disclose member information without prior notice. We will always act on the side of life.
IF YOU ARE IN CRISIS RIGHT NOW: Call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, 24/7) | Text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line, 24/7) | Call 911 if you or someone else is in immediate danger | SAMHSA Helpline: 1-800-662-4357 (24/7, free, confidential)
If You Believe Another Member Is in Crisis
Do not attempt to manage the situation alone. Contact INCIID admin through contact form. If you believe the situation is an emergency, call 911 directly. You do not need to have someone’s full name or address to report a concern — emergency services are trained to work with limited information.
INCIID volunteers are not mental health professionals. We are a community of people who care deeply about each other and who take member safety seriously. If you are struggling — whether in crisis or simply carrying more than you can hold right now — please tell someone who can help. Reaching out here is never wrong. You are never alone in this community.
6. Stalking, Harassment, and Member Safety
INCIID has encountered situations in which members of our community were being stalked or monitored by former partners, family members, or other individuals who used forum content or registration information to track, surveil, or harass them. We take this threat seriously and have built protections into our community specifically to address it.
What INCIID Does to Protect You
- Your real name is never displayed publicly under any circumstances
- Your location information is never shared with other members
- Your handle is the only identity visible in the community
- Registration information is accessible only to INCIID administrative staff
- INCIID does not confirm or deny whether any specific individual is a member of our community
What You Should Know
Forum content may be indexed by search engines. If a stalker or former partner knows your handle, they may be able to find your posts through a targeted search. For this reason we strongly encourage members who have safety concerns to:
- Choose a handle that has never been used anywhere else online and cannot be connected to your real identity
- Avoid mentioning specific geographic details, workplace information, clinic names, or any detail that could narrow down your location or identity
- Never post photographs that could identify you, your home, or your surroundings
- Consider using a dedicated email address that is not connected to your real name or primary accounts when registering with INCIID
If You Believe You Are Being Stalked or Monitored Through INCIID
Contact INCIID immediately. We will work with you to secure your account, change your handle if necessary, and review any suspicious activity. In situations involving credible threats to physical safety, we will cooperate with law enforcement to protect you — with your knowledge and involvement wherever possible.
If Someone Is Using INCIID to Stalk or Harass Another Person
This is a serious violation of these Terms of Use and will result in immediate permanent account termination. INCIID will report credible stalking activity to law enforcement and will provide whatever information is legally required to protect a member who is in danger.
Private Message Safety
If you receive unsolicited private messages that make you uncomfortable, ask for personal information, attempt to identify you, or feel threatening or inappropriate in any way — report them immediately using the forum reporting function or by contacting nancy@inciid.org. Do not feel obligated to respond. Your safety and comfort in this community are not negotiable.
7. Medical and Professional Forums Disclaimer
INCIID provides educational information and peer support. Nothing on INCIID constitutes medical advice, and no doctor-patient relationship is established through any INCIID forum, article, podcast, or other content.
Medical and professional forums on INCIID are provided for educational question-and-answer purposes only. Expert contributors are volunteers and may not respond to all posts. Members should always consult qualified healthcare providers for medical decisions.
8. Prohibited Activities
Members may not:
- Advertise or solicit products, services, or websites
- Sell, exchange, solicit, or request prescription medications
- Post spam or unauthorized promotions
- Conduct unapproved research or data collection
- Share copyrighted or unauthorized content
- Attempt to identify, expose, or reveal the real identity of any member
- Use INCIID to monitor, track, or surveil another person
- Create multiple accounts without explicit INCIID approval
- Use automated tools, bots, or scrapers to collect member data or content
Violations may result in immediate account termination and reporting to appropriate authorities.
9. User Content and Copyright
Members are responsible for all content they post. Content must not infringe on the intellectual property rights of others. Posting copyrighted material without permission is prohibited.
Photographs
By submitting photographs to INCIID you confirm ownership of the image, grant INCIID rights to use and publish it in connection with INCIID’s editorial and community mission, and accept responsibility for any claims related to its use. Do not submit photographs that could identify you or other members in ways that compromise safety or anonymity.
10. Moderation and Enforcement
INCIID reserves the right to remove content that violates these guidelines, issue warnings, and suspend or terminate accounts. Enforcement generally follows this process:
- First violation: warning
- Second violation: suspension
- Further violations: case-by-case action up to and including permanent termination
INCIID reserves the right to bypass the standard enforcement process and take immediate action — including permanent termination without warning — for serious violations including but not limited to stalking, identity exposure, harassment, or credible threats of harm.
INCIID may report serious violations to Internet Service Providers, law enforcement, or other appropriate authorities.
11. Donations and Financial Terms
Donations support INCIID’s nonprofit mission and are processed through secure systems. Donations are non-refundable once processed. Recurring donations continue until canceled. Cancellation requests must be submitted in writing. INCIID will acknowledge cancellations within a reasonable timeframe.
12. Communications
As part of membership, users may receive periodic communications such as newsletters or updates. These communications support INCIID’s nonprofit mission. Members may opt out of non-essential communications at any time. Certain community features or benefits may be limited for members who opt out. Members may not use INCIID to send unsolicited communications or spam. Violations may result in immediate account termination.
13. Limitation of Liability
INCIID is a nonprofit organization providing community support and educational resources. To the fullest extent permitted by law, INCIID shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of this platform, including but not limited to damages arising from member interactions, third-party content, or forum discussions.
By using INCIID you agree to indemnify and hold harmless INCIID, its officers, directors, staff, and volunteers from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from content you post or actions you take on the platform that cause harm to third parties.
14. Governing Law
These Terms of Use are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without regard to its conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising under these Terms of Use shall be resolved in the courts of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
15. Changes to These Terms
INCIID reserves the right to update these Terms of Use at any time. For material changes, INCIID will provide at least 30 days notice via email or a prominent notice on the website before changes take effect.
Your continued use of INCIID after changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms of Use. If you do not agree with updated terms, you may request deletion of your account at any time by contacting nancy@inciid.org.
