The IVF Blind Spot: New Technology Finds Discarded Eggs Doctors Didn’t See

Researchers tested a new technology that looks for eggs after a normal IVF lab has already finished an egg search and marked the remaining fluid as empty.

Here’s what they found:

    • In over half of IVF cycles, at least one egg was missed during routine manual screening.
    • When re-examined with the new device, hundreds of otherwise discarded eggs were recovered across several clinics.
    • More than half of those recovered eggs were mature and usable.
    • Those eggs fertilized normally and produced high-quality embryos.
    • In at least one case, a recovered egg went on to become a live birth.

This means: eggs that could have been used were being thrown away simply because no one saw them under a microscope.

What This Means for Consumers

  1. You may have had more eggs than you were told

If eggs were missed and discarded, you may actually have had more opportunities than originally believed — but they were never used.

This is especially meaningful for people with:

    • a low number of retrieved eggs
    • a low ovarian reserve
    • previous IVF cycles with few or no embryos

Even one extra egg can change your chances of success.

  1. IVF success rates may be artificially limited

IVF outcomes are closely tied to the number of eggs available. If usable eggs are systematically missed, then reported outcomes may be underestimating actual biological potential.

  1. This was not previously disclosed to patients

Most patients assume:

  • “All eggs are found during retrieval.”
  • “Discarded fluid truly contains nothing.”

This research shows those assumptions may be incorrect.

There’s an underlying process issue that patients weren’t previously told about.

Why This Is a Shock to the IVF Community

  1. It challenges decades-old workflows

Manual egg screening hasn’t changed much over time. The assumption has been that embryologists find all eggs in the fluid. This technology suggests that assumption may be wrong — and more often than expected.

  1. It reframes the issue as structural rather than human error

This isn’t about one lab or one embryologist missing eggs. The missed eggs happened:

    • across multiple clinics
    • despite experienced staff
    • even with extra checks in some clinics

That suggests it’s a systemic issue with the current method.

  1. It raises ethical and consent questions

If usable eggs are being routinely discarded without patients knowing it, clinics may face questions like:

    • Should patients be told this risk exists?
    • Should discarded fluid be routinely re-checked?
    • Could this become part of standard consent processes in the future?

This could reshape IVF lab practices, informed consent language, and even malpractice considerations.
